Get Grilling With a Gas Barbecue PDF  | Print |  E-mail
Sometimes, you can smell spring long before you can see it.  As soon as the springtime sun begins to shine, tried and true grill masters are filling the air with the aromas of steaks, burgers and sausages.  Forget the robins and the daffodils; that barbecue aroma is the true harbinger of spring.

Countless households around the world note the gas barbecue as one of the primary cooking appliances.  A gas barbecue makes it easy and convenience to cook practically anything.  You can instantly turn an ordinary pound of hamburger into an extraordinary dinner with minimal time or preparation, and virtually no cleanup.  Yes, the gas barbecue is one of man's perfect creations.

If you think that a gas barbecue is no more than a grill and gas tank with an iron casing, you might be in for a surprise.  There are many different types of gas barbecues, each offering unique features.  In essence, a gas barbecue is no more than a "grown up" charcoal grill, using a different fuel.  That's why so many people find it hard to choose the best variety of barbecue to suit their needs.  Some savor the flavor and aroma that a charcoal grill delivers, while others appreciate the convenience and cleanliness afforded by gas barbecues.  The bottom line is in knowing what you want from your grill.  If you're looking for an easy and convenient way to cook outdoors, then a gas barbecue is probably your best choice.

If you're in the market for a gas barbecue, there are three main types for you to consider.  Make sure that the style you choose is able to keep up with your grilling needs:

Open Top Freestanding Barbecues

The freestanding open-top barbecue is the type of gas grill that features a sort of open hearth on legs.  For added convenience, some manufacturers will offer optional wheels.  This type of gas barbecue comes in different sizes, but the features are generally the same.   Some are smaller than a standard grill, while others can easily accommodate a couple of large steaks.  This style of gas grill typically provides the added convenience of a rotisserie, warming area for cooked food and storage compartment.  Once assembled, however, an open top freestanding barbecue can rarely be easily moved for storage.

Hooded Gas Barbecues

The hooded gas barbecue grill is largely recognized for its large size and rectangular shape.  Most styles of this type of barbecue also feature hinged lids.   The hinged lid, or hood, can be closed to completely cover the food, which is handy when slow-grilling or smoking your food.   Hooded gas barbecues offer more features than standard barbecues, with warming areas, main burners, side burners, movable grates and preparation areas among the typical benefits.  Some models boast a rotisserie and spit, an infrared bottom burner and other accessories.  Of course, all of these added benefits will often add up to a fairly hefty price tag.

Kettle Gas Barbecues

Resembling a large metal ball on legs, kettle barbecues are usually small in size and easily transported from one place to another.  Most are mounted on trolleys for quick transport, while others are installed as freestanding units.  Like the other popular types of gas grills, kettle gas barbecues come with rotisseries and built-in thermometers.  Many people who prefer the simplicity of direct grilling choose this type of gas barbecue.

When spring is in the air and it's time to get grilling, don't reach for the charcoal.  Gas barbecue grills make cooking outdoors fast, easy and convenient, and the sheer volume of styles on the market make it easy to find the right choice to meet your grilling needs, and suit your budget.
